WhatsApp is my recommended go-to daily messenger, with the right blend of security and scale. But with this planned change, iMessage will be a platform I can no longer recommend. Its end-to-end encrypted architecture is the best in the business-seamless multi-device access, rolling backups, trusted device authentication but it stores copies of encryption keys in unencrypted iCloud backups and, worse, as soon as an iMessage user messages outside Appleās walled garden, it reverts to SMS, a technology with pitiful, outdated security. IMessage is a strange hybrid when it comes to security.
